AWIS was incorporated on April 26, 1996 as the Agricultural Weather Information Service, Inc.. Our original focus was on providing agricultural weather services. The demand for our services grew from other economic sectors, so we soon decided to do business as AWIS (the abbreviation of Agricultural Weather Information Service) Weather Services, reflecting on the broader role of our business. Although we still serve agricultural clients, much of our business today is with energy and utility firms, weather data services and forecasting for use in business intelligence, and in other specialized areas.
Our experience runs deep. Prior to April 1996, the founders of AWIS worked
for the National Weather Service (NWS) and gained considerable knowledge and
experience. Since all meteorologists depend on the NWS for basic weather
observations and raw forecasts, our insights into that process have proven
to be extremely valuable. We have first hand knowledge of NWS
instrumentation and data handling as well as the forecast process.

Of particular note, Weather Underground has developed the world's largest network of personal weather stations (almost 10,000 stations in the US and over 3,000 across the rest of the world) that provides our site's users with the most localized weather conditions available. Embracing the community aspect of the web, we have developed WunderPhotos, a section where our members upload and share photographs of weather related content; our popular Blogs section allows members to post weather-related blogs in addition to Jeff Masters' widely-read WunderBlog.Alaska Climate Research Center
