An Article and Tutorial:  Connecting to MySql

Remote MySql Database Server

You may want to review the MySQL 5.0 Reference Manual and Connecting to the MySQL Server at  http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.5/en/connector-net.html.  Left nav has earlier versions listed also.

Before you can connect to MySQL from another computer, you must enable your computer as an Access Host. It may sound confusing, but cPanel makes this very simple.

Okay, you have a dynamic IP address (Upper Left Panel). Therefore, every time you go online, or every once in awhile, your IP changes. You have a few options here. The most secure, would be to update your IP in Remote MySQL every time your IP changes. However, you do have other options available. If the first two parts of your IP never change then, you could enter 93.138.%.% , where the first two parts are your actual IP address numbers. The % character is called a wild card which you can take to mean all.

However, if you are making the application to be distributed to different computers, The above options won't work without some serious programming on both client and server sides therefore, you could simply enter % (a percentage sign, wild card) in the Add Access Hosts text field. This will allow any IP to remotely connect to your databases.

The cPanel below has a remote MySql database server and also shows your IP.

cPanel Databases Tab

The cPanel below is very easy to use and spells everything out for you on the Add page. However, wild card is not allowed for any IP. Adding Host to MySql Remote Server

This host allows you to use the % wildcard freely.
Any IP Allowed
